Dear Mika,

Mika Ninagawa
蜷川実花さんへ、

I Simply love your work! I really do. I guess you heard that many times. I am not trying to be original here, just I want to express my feelings when I look at your colorful pictures. [continue…]

I have been following up your art since 2005, when my friend Akiko told me about you. As I am myself a photographer, Akiko brought me one of your book thinking that I might like it as I love colours and more specifically, saturated pictures. I liked the book as soon as I opened it ! As soon as I entered your world, I knew that you were able to create a universe I would have loved to imagine myself. I’ve always loved to take details of materials: walls, teared up posters, a contrast of colours on a wall and so on. I remember being in the streets of Madrid in the summertime, taking photos of all this atmosphere full of colours; something we do not have in Paris (we do not really have it either in Tokyo) as we do not have this beautiful daylight all over Spain (we do have an amazing morning light in Japan though!) Anyway, I remember that summer when I entered your dimension where colours prevail.

I’ve heard that you started with black and white photography, and so did I. Especially in Paris where I started taking photos. But when I traveled, I couldn’t think of black and white. I could not think in black and white when in Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey or Malta, for example, as the light and the colours were so vivid. But what I especially love in your work – and this is the main point – is that you keep on working on the photos and with such an excellent result! I never thought of doing something with the pictures after I took them, like associate colours, post-processing, saturate colours… Now, even with a computer, I can not get exactly what I want with my post-processing. I would love to meet you, talk to you to tell you how much I like what you are doing and also to ask you how you can get such colors when you work on your photographs.

Of course, I enjoyed a LOT this first solo exhibition in Opera city. It took me in the middle of your vision, your interior world. I felt so warm I could feel and touch what you see, what you want to show. I love the flowers series for its abstract compositions. I love the Goldfish series for the fun. I love your new work for the choice of the backgrounds. I do love your portraits for the adequation of the models and the settings of the backgrounds and objects. I remember the « room » during Space for your future (what a great exhibition!), this red aquarium, when you were working on this Goldfish idea. This time, it is ten times bigger. I felt so many things watching you work!

Du fond du cœur merci! (meaning: from the bottom of my heart thank you.) Thank you so much for sharing all your beautiful pictures in this exhibition.

Mika Ninagawa @ Tokyo Opera city until December 28th. A must be seen exhibition.

PS: Merci à PatPat pour la relecture de mon pauvre anglais… 😉
